Mindelo, on the island of São Vicente, is the cultural capital of Cabo Verde: a port city of morna and coladeira, painted façades and late conversations, best known for its Carnival.
Flat Fanon takes its name from its street, named after Frantz Fanon, the Martinican thinker of decolonisation. It's a flat in the middle of city life, a few steps from the parades, with a table that looks down onto the street.
How Flat Fanon
plays the idea.
Ray Oldenburg described eight things every great third place shares. Here are the ones this space lives most clearly. draft
- 01Conversation is the main activity
The embroidered word on the wall says it: a tocatina is an informal gathering where the guitars and cavaquinhos come out and everyone joins in.
- 02The mood is playful
Carnival, New Year's Eve and the music festivals fill the streets outside, and the flat is part of it.
- 03A home away from home
Local craft everywhere: woven baskets on the walls, carved wood, a big table for long meals.
- 04The regulars
A neighbourhood street, not a hotel strip. The same faces at the window, the café and the corner every day.
Inside.
The program.
What we imagine for this room. Dates come with the monthly letter. draft
- ACarnival in Mindelo
Stay for the parades in February or March, with the costumes, drums and the whole city in the street.
- BNew Year in the city
See the year out with Mindelo, then come back to the flat for the after-party.
- CFestival season
Music festivals, theatre and tocatinas through the year, all close to the door.
Two shores,
four doors.
