The place

Where it
happens.

Cacilhas sits on the south bank of the Tagus, a short ferry ride from Cais do Sodré in Lisbon. It's an old neighbourhood of fish restaurants and river views, with commuters passing through every day.

Our studio is a ground-floor room with glass doors straight onto the street, and a raised platform that already looks like a stage.

A third place, in practice

How Studio Cacilhas
plays the idea.

Ray Oldenburg described eight things every great third place shares. Here are the ones this space lives most clearly. draft

  1. 01Accessible & accommodating

Glass doors at street level: you can see in before you walk in, and walking in is easy.

  2. 02Conversation is the main activity

One big shared table at the centre, not rows of desks.

  3. 03A leveler

The platform belongs to whoever is playing, showing or speaking that night, not to a VIP.

  4. 04Neutral ground

Neighbours, ferry commuters and artists from both banks of the river meet on equal terms.
